Perch
Jenner, CA | Unbuilt Concept
Set along the rugged coastal hills on the Sonoma Coast, this small collection of guest cabins is conceived as a quiet retreat immersed within the landscape rather than imposed upon it, taking inspiration from the nearby Sea Ranch community. The project explores a restrained architectural language of compact, elevated volumes lightly touching the terrain, carefully positioned to preserve the natural contours of the hillside and frame expansive views toward the ocean and distant horizon.
Each structure is oriented to cultivate a distinct relationship to light, weather, and topography. Narrow footprints and minimal points of contact reduce disturbance to the land while creating a sense of hovering above the coastal grasses and shifting fog. The cabins are experienced as solitary objects dispersed across the hillside, offering moments of both privacy and connection as visitors move between paths, overlooks, and shared outdoor spaces.
Materially, the architecture is intentionally subdued, allowing atmosphere and landscape to remain primary. Darkened exterior surfaces recede into the coastal shadows while large openings capture changing light throughout the day, from dense morning fog to the warm glow of sunset over the Pacific. The result is an immersive landscape retreat defined by silence, isolation, and a heightened awareness of the surrounding environment.
